One of Ryde's iconic sea-front land marks was gutted by fire last night. As we are located close by, we noticed quite a decent firework display at around 9pm which apparently was due to a wedding taking place. About an hour later, significant numbers of fire engines began to arrive and then we could see the smoke. The roof of the Victorian building was well alight particularly around the 'tower' area. The building had been evacuated before even the fire fighters arrived and thankfully we understand that no one has been injured. Our thoughts go out to those affected.
