Fisherman's Cottage, Shanklin Chine
Marc Tuckey at Fisherman's Cottage
Situated at the bottom of Shanklin Chine is this quaint thatched pub, Fisherman's Cottage. Originally built in about 1817 by William Colenutt who had excavated a path through Shanklin Chine and opened it to the public.
In 1845 the cottage was leased to James Sampson, William’s son-in-law who provided visitors with hot brine baths- considered to be very beneficial in those days.
The Colenutt family occupied the cottage until 1960 when, during a terrible storm, Miss Colenutt became trapped in the kitchen in two feet of water. She rang a bell for help which fortunately was heard by Charlie Spencer of the near-by Chine Inn who came to her rescue.
The Fisherman’s Cottage is right on the island coastal path at the end of Shanklin Esplanade and sometimes has live entertainment on this wonderful patio overlooking the beach, the perfect refreshment stop after visiting Shanklin Chine. The pub features in our DVD; An Island Pub Tour- The Thirst Round in which Marc interviews a local fisherman who was part of the 'rescue team' that came to the aid of Miss Colenutt.
