Some of the Island’s villages need a bit more discovering as they lie ‘off the beacon track’. This means that the village pub is mainly populated by the locals but never the less, visitors are always made welcome and it would be a pity to pass these hidden gems by and miss the opportunity to absorb the local atmosphere.
The Sportsman's Rest in Porchfield is a prime example. It was established in the early 1860's by Isaac Arnold and served as a watering hole for the soldiers who were based near by at the Newtown Rifle Range.
Over the years the pub has had many landlords but still retains that village pub atmosphere. The Sportsman's Rest features in our DVD, 'An Island Pub Tour, The Second Round'.
