Godshill
Perhaps the most famous of all the Isle of Wight villages is Godshill. Situated between Shanklin and Newport, the village attracts thousands of visitors a year many of whom are on coach holidays.
The village is renowned for it's traditional tea gardens and thatched buildings. Towering above the village is All Saints Church which was largely built in the 14th century. However, the church was originally supposed to be built on the south east side of the village about where the Griffin pub now stands.
Legand has it that the stones which were to be used in building the church, mysteriously were moved during the night from the original site to the top of the hill on the north side of the village. Everytime the buliders bought them back, they would move to the top of the hill again! Eventually this was seen as a sign from God that he wanted the church to be built at the top of the hill so hence the name: Godshill. Not so good for the older visitor to the church as it's quite a climb to get there!
Other features of the village are the Old Smithy gift shop and tea rooms, the famous Cider Barn and the Model Village which can be found in the grounds of the Old Vicarage.
