The Solent Inn
Marc Tuckey samples the Solent's beer
Located in Monkton Street in Ryde is a good example of an early traditional pub of which Ryde had nearly 100 in Victorian times!
The Solent began life as the Beach Tavern in the late 1740's as in those days it would of been close to the shore. Later, when the Esplanade and The Strand were constructed, the pub was cut off from the sea fronts and thus became known as the Strand Tavern. It became know as The Solent in 1900 and now days is frequented mainly by the locals who enjoy the real ales which are always available.
