The Wheatsheaf Hotel
The Wheatsheaf Hotel in St Thomas’s Square dates back to the 17th century and it was built in 1694. There was a well documented incident in July 1831 when a duel took place behind the bowling green at Carisbrooke Castle. It involved a Lieutenant John Blundell of the 101st Regiment and fellow officer; Lieutenant Maguire. John Blundell who had only just married, was shot through the lung and spine. He was bought here and nursed upstairs in room 12 by his new bride Jane till his death 2 days later. The hotel has had some famous guests over the years including; John Craven, Rick Wakeman, Bob Holness, Chris Evans and Billie Piper, to name but a few.
